Bushehr is purely economic, not political issue – analyst – RT

‘The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) clearly states that countries have the right to develop a peaceful nuclear program and that the countries that already have nuclear technologies should share them with others. It is their obligation. So all accusations made against Russia and Iran with respect to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program are unfounded,’ Pereslegin told RT.

U.S. Expands Asian NATO To Contain And Confront China By Rick Rozoff

What in fact the U.S. is doing to complete its status as history’s first sole world military superpower, as its commander-in-chief Barack Obama referred to it in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, is to not only drag almost all Asia-Pacific nations into a military bloc analogous to NATO, but to integrate the East into a global military alliance with NATO as the foundation.

Russia, Afghanistan and Starwars: Westward Hu By Eric Walberg

The Atlantists are on the ascendant these days in Moscow. Russian President Dmitri Medvedev’s hamburger lunch with United States President Barack Obama during his visit to Silicon Valley last month apparently left a pleasant taste in his mouth. Now relations with NATO are on the mend, as Russia plans to send 27 Mi-17 helicopters to Afghanistan, NATO Military Committee Chairman Giampaolo di Paola said after a meeting with Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Nikolai Makarov last Friday. Rosoboronexport has even offered to throw in the first three helicopters for free.

Books: The Trojan Spy by Gaither Stewart

From Feodor Dostoevsky and Joseph Conrad to Doris Lessing, many have explored what makes nihilists or anarchists or terrorists. In The Trojan Spy, Gaither Stewart enters the same maze with Anatoly Nikitin, a Russian double agent and spymaster from the Cold War era who, in its aftermath, intends to kill his CIA controller responsible for the death of his lover.

Showdown in the Red Sea: U.S. Sends 11 Warships to Confront Iran By Washington’s Blog

What should we make of the fact that 11 U.S. warships and an Israeli warship are sailing up the Suez Canal on their way to the Red Sea?

This is – on the surface – a face-off over Iran’s support for relief ships trying to sail into Gaza. Specifically, Iran has said it will have Iranian military ships escort the flotilla providing humanitarian goods to Gaza to make sure it arrives safely. On the other hand, the U.S. has backed Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Kyrgyzstan: Eurasian geopolitics 101 By Eric Walberg

The unrest has been simmering since the interim government came to power on 7 April, when 81 protesters were killed by police and president Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled the capital to his home in the south. The new government quickly established control over the capital and the north of the country, but not in Bakiyev’s south, part of the Ferghana Valley where Kyrgyz, Uzbeks and Tajiks have been living side-by-side for centuries. Stalin divvied the valley up between ethnic republics in the 1920s, creating the basis for the current problems. Ethnicity, however, is really a cover for the underlying settler/ nomad distinction, the Uzbeks being more business-oriented and, in the current pro-market environment, richer, the Kyrgyz more pastoral. The People’s Friendship University was razed because it was funded by a wealthy Uzbek businessman.

Kyrgyzstan as a Geopolitical Pivot in Great Power Rivalries: Washington, Moscow, Beijing and the Geopolitics of Central Asia By F. William Engdahl

Today the tiny remote country is being shaken by what appears to be an extremely well-planned popular uprising to topple US-backed president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Preliminary analysts suggested that Moscow had more than a passing interest in promoting regime change there and that the events unfolding might be Moscow’s attempt to stage its own ‘reverse’ version of Washington’s ‘Color Revolutions’ — Georgia’s Rose Revolution of 2003 or Ukraine’s Orange Revolution in 2004, as well as the 2005 Tulip Revolution that brought the pro-US Bakiyev to power. In the midst of this ongoing power shift in Kyrgyzstan, however, who is doing what to whom, is far from clear.

Western Civilization is Doomed – The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty: Last Gasp of a Moribund Civilization By Prof. John Kozy

One day, I asked, “Frank, how do you know how to do that?” He answered, “Johnny, what man has done, man can do.” Therein lies the fallacy of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Science and technology is a Pandora’s Box. Once opened by one man, company, or country, what is emitted soon becomes everyone’s.

NATO summit: ‘Not rational enough’ By Eric Walberg

The two-day NATO foreign ministers meeting on 22-23 April focussed on the military alliance’s 21st century Strategic Concept and on the war in Afghanistan. Top on the agenda was putting paid to any notion that nuclear weapons might be removed from Europe; rather, they would be integrated into the Pentagon’s pan-European interceptor missile programme in line with the US Department of Defence’s new Nuclear Posture Review.

Aleksandr SHUSTOV – Kurmanbek Bakiev Left Kyrgyzstan by Russian Military Aircraft

At night on April 15 Bakiev left Jalal-Abad for Taraz, Kazakhstan. Head of the interim government Roza Otunbaeva said Kyrgyzstan’s caretaker authorities agreed to Bakiev’s departure at the request made by several international organizations and country leaders who urged to ensure the civilized treatment of the republic’s former President and his personal safety, which the interim government was unable to guarantee in Kyrgyzstan.

Venezuela – U.S. Research File The Interdependence Behind Bilateral Political Tensions: Economic Realities Affecting Venezuela – U.S. Relations By Felix Blossier

In January 2006, the sixth gathering of the World Social Forum, during which Hugo Chávez as well as other left-leaning and socialist leaders fiercely criticized imperialist practices, was held in the Caracas Hilton Hotel. As James Surowiecki noted in an article for The New Yorker six months before the conference opened, a meeting sponsored by the Venezuelan Ministry of Finance took place at the same hotel. The aim of the aforementioned meeting was meant to promote American investments in Venezuela. How can one explain such a paradox? Are Venezuela and the United States only rhetorical political foes? Or, is there an underlying economic relationship between these two countries that renders them important trading partners?
