04-Jul-09

The majority of the group ended up in Ramle Prison. Those of us who are Free Gaza organizers had been hearing some news from them, statements, interviews and letters since they arrived. From the first night, the Free Gaza 21 have been busy trying to get news out of the prison about the illegality of Israel’s actions in relation to themselves and the other inmates inside Ramle Prison who have no voice.

Azmi Bishara, “Iran: The Game of Nations”

The West’s stated desire for dialogue with Tehran to persuade it to rein in its nuclear ambitions while simultaneously conspiring against Iran both inside the country and externally is part and parcel of the ‘game of nations’. The idea is to weaken Iran in negotiations. If the regime in Iran collapses in the process, no one in the West will shed a tear. But the brains in the ruling establishment know that Iran will survive the crisis, which is why they have stopped meddling for a moment. They do not want to drive Iranian negotiators away from the negotiating table, which would cause more headaches for Washington in other complicated issues in which Iran has a role to play.

Video: The Real News Network – Honduras under siege

Video: The military coup government of Roberto Micheletti is coming under increasing economic pressure to concede power, whether from holds on US humanitarian aid and World Bank loan money or the sealing of the borders by all three neighbors. On the political front, it has yet to be recognized by a single foreign government. And domestically, it has resorted to the tactics of Central America’s dark past to crush the people’s angry response to the coup. Beatings, curfews, spot-checks, censorship and death threats. Honduran human rights advocate Bertha Oliva believes that the actions of the ‘golpistas’ (coup leaders) can only be explained as a reaction to the growing demand for citizen participation in Honduran politics. Though the Golpistas have sought to make their actions appear necessary to defend the republic from a power-hungry President, Manuel Zelaya, Oliva tells The Real News that the real story is the opposite. That it is they, as the polical-economic ruling class, that are afraid of losing their power to an increasingly engaged citizenry.

William Blum: Anti-Empire Report, Number 71 ‘Much ado about nothing’

04-Jul-09

In his world-prominent speech to the Middle East on June 4, Obama mentioned that ‘In the middle of the Cold War, the United States played a role in the overthrow of a democratically elected Iranian government.’ So we have the president of the United States admitting to a previous overthrow of the Iranian government while the United States is in the very midst of trying to overthrow the current Iranian government. This will serve as the best example of hypocrisy that’s come along in quite a while.

Manmohan and the Maoists By Satya Sagar

The greed of the few and the misery of the majority means India is much more divided than ever before- not just along class lines but more so around identities of caste, religion, language, geography as people seek security in numbers of what they consider ‘their own’. And everywhere even modest attempts to assert local identities and demand autonomy and respect for sub-national cultures are being brutally put down using maximum force by the Indian state- that can tolerate only slaves and not citizens with full rights.

Prison Cell, Givon Jail, Ramle, Israel: Interview from a kidnapped passenger, Adie Mormech

This is not about us here in the cells, it’s about the denial of human rights to the people of Palestine, and in particular the inhumane blockade of Gaza. People must not forget about what is happening to Gaza. At the moment they are even being denied food and medical supplies. After the carnage of the 1500 people killed in January, we won’t forget and we’ll keep on going and keep fighting for the human rights of the people of Palestine.
